Staff Spotlight: Hilary Holland, Human Resources Manager

September 25, 2018 by Sam Puckett

Our semi-annual All Hands week is less than a month away, and it’s going to be one for the record books. This year we surpassed 50 full-time employees, and for the first time, we’ll all be together in one office!

Companies like ours that are experiencing rapid growth like we are rely heavily on Human Resources to help them adjust and fine-tune new processes. Lucky for us, we have one of the best in the business!

Meet Hilary:

Staff Spotlight: Hilary Holland

Tell us a bit about your background and how you got into this industry.

I was a young mother trying to find my way professionally when I was hired at my first non-retail job in a legal staffing agency. It was a boutique firm, and I was exposed to so much. From being the Executive Assistant to the President, to running the temp desk, to placing legal talent in the top firms in NYC/NJ, I wore many hats. I began to see the differences between HR and staffing, and asked my boss to let me take on HR responsibilities since the firm was growing.

I began to handle the unemployment claims, run the payroll for the temporary staff, and delve into benefits, and fell in love with HR. My career moved forward in talent acquisition and later into a more generalist capacity.

When I was in the market here in Florida, I was fascinated by Spatial Networks and the opening for an HR professional. Anyone is excited to dig in to a new role. But here, I experienced a different kind of excitement. I’m so super stoked about this industry which is new to me, and couldn’t fathom that someone saw an opening in the market and had the wherewithal to launch a dream like this. It’s ruined me for any future employment for life.

What does your job entail?

HR folks have a curious role. We have to interact evenly with organizational leadership and the employees in a dual “dance” to both minimize potential risk to the company, and care for the people. I have to ensure the organization and the staff stay healthy, and strategically add to the profitability, purpose, and culture of the company.

As the HR Manager, that means I am responsible for moving things directionally in performance evaluations, policy and procedures, comp, Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS) and benefits management, parts of the staffing plan, employee development and relations, compliance, and the health and security of Spatial Networks.

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

I find comfort in making sure things are taken care of, so work and home life need to be in control for me to feel good. What gets me moving is feeling I am an integral part of something bigger than myself.

Making my mark on the day, or issuing some figurative statement that says, “Hilary was here” is what matters - even if it means just in my writing, or some activity that moves my life forward artistically, professionally, or altruistically. Those are the kind of things that move my bones every day. My son says I romanticize everything; I think that’s fairly true.

What’s the most rewarding (or challenging) part of your job?

The most rewarding is taking care of others in a meaningful way. My favorite part is when I’ve reached a place in the working relationship where the trust is eminent, where they say, “Hilary has this. We’re good.” And then I do.

My least favorite is facilitating a separation of employment for any reason.

What’s something you’re excited about right now?

Ooooh - the growth at Spatial Networks. The ideas being toyed with for new future chapters and reaching new channels. There’s so much going on; it’s flying everywhere and that is so exciting.

What do you do outside of work?

I am a bibliophile and a writer, forever working on that “memoir” that never gets finished, on blogs, prose and poetry, and other short works. Some of my stuff is on The Daily Beast, Huffington Post, etc. under “Hilary Holland Lorenzo.”

I’m the weirdo who you find on Friday nights set up in a booth by myself in your favorite sushi restaurant taking side bites whilst banging around on my laptop. I also sing, so I guess that makes me a singer.

What is something surprising about you?

I worked in a Cambodian orphanage for a month and a half, also teaching English classes there. Just up and went. Humbling. Surreal. It was a defining moment in my life. That’s all I can say. You’ll have to wait for the book!
