Exploring field workflow automation in geospatial industries with Fulcrum

February 29, 2024

Industries such as environmental consulting and utility services are increasingly recognizing the practical benefits of Fulcrum’s platform for field data collection and process management. Fulcrum’s approach focuses on rapidly evolving existing workflows to improve efficiency. Join us as we explore case studies from GeoForce, Great Lakes Wellhead Inc. (GLW), DIEHLUX, and TREKK Design Group to see firsthand how Fulcrum’s technology streamlines tasks and boosts overall efficiency with field workflow automation.

GeoForce: Automated workflows

Fulcrum’s platform capabilities extend beyond data collection to encompass process management, enabling electrical utility contractor GeoForce to establish automated field operation processes.

For several of its applications, GeoForce utilizes Fulcrum’s intuitive field workflow automation function. As Brian Stroud, VP and GIs Developer, explains, “We have triggers set up in some apps that will create a report. For example, if we come across a leaking transformer, the field team will record all the information and take photos of the hazard. When this record is saved, a report is generated that includes photos, the location, the data collected, and the reporter’s name and contact information. This report is then automatically sent to team leaders, to me, and to the client. This way, information is shared quickly and automatically, and it lets us get going on urgent problems quickly.”

Great Lakes Wellhead: Consolidating trips

Oil and gas company Great Lakes Wellhead, Inc. (GLW) has embraced Fulcrum’s innovative solutions to navigate the complex landscape of wellhead compliance regulations. By leveraging the Fulcrum platform, GLW has significantly expedited its inspection processes, ensuring compliance with stringent federal regulations. Juston Iburg, Director of Business Development at GLW, emphasizes the critical role Fulcrum plays in meeting inspection deadlines. “Fulcrum is key in our ability to keep inspections moving forward, preventing clients from missing deadlines and facing penalties.”

With ongoing demand for wellhead accountability, having accurate, up-to-date information at each geographical location is critical. “We can’t expect to simply do some inspections and be done with it,” says Iburg. “We will be revisiting the same places, rechecking the same locations, to keep in compliance with these regulations. And as new work is done, conditions change, or regulations evolve, the need for the information to be up-to-date and shareable between contractors, clients, and regulators, remains.”

Beyond compliance, Fulcrum facilitates operational efficiency through field workflow automation, enabling GLW to consolidate multiple tasks into a single visit. Iburg explains, “Rather than sending 100 people a year to do different inspections and tasks at the same site, a crew of two people can do it all at once using Fulcrum.”

DIEHLUX: Automated reporting

DIEHLUX, an environmental and natural resource consulting company, has leveraged Fulcrum to optimize geospatial data collection and process management. By adopting Fulcrum’s integrated platform, DIEHLUX streamlined its inspection processes, improving accuracy and efficiency while minimizing manual tasks.

The transition significantly reduced the burden of photo management. Fulcrum seamlessly integrates multimedia elements such as videos into reports, creating compelling narratives about site conditions. Fulcrum’s user-friendly interface and automated reporting features enable DIEHLUX to save between two to five hours per day, per employee.

TREKK Design Group: Unskippable fields = fewer return trips

Before implementing Fulcrum, the water utility contractor TREKK Design Group encountered issues with missing or incorrect data. However, with Fulcrum’s automatic geotagging of inspection records and mandatory, unskippable fields, they have significantly reduced these issues.

Fulcrum’s geospatial capabilities validate each record’s location, ensuring that inspectors are examining the correct structures during inspections. Additionally, Fulcrum’s mandatory fields and conditional logic prevent incomplete data collection, minimizing the need for follow-up visits. Jared Carey, Innovation Specialist at TREKK, notes that Fulcrum helps to improve data accuracy and thoroughness. “The inspectors can’t even leave the job site without entering all the data in Fulcrum as required.”

Fulcrum’s role in shaping the future of geospatial industries

The integration of Fulcrum’s field workflow automation solutions is proving to be a game-changer for the geospatial industries. From GeoForce’s handling of urgent electrical issues to Great Lakes Wellhead’s consolidation of inspection trips, DIEHLUX’s streamlined environmental reporting, and TREKK Design Group’s enhancement of data quality, Fulcrum has demonstrated its capacity to elevate operational practices. The Fulcrum platform redefines field data management, meeting the precision and agility needs of outdoor industries reliant on geolocation.
