Scope of work template

Use this form to outline all the work agreed to be performed as part of a contract or subcontract for a construction or engineering project.

A Scope of Work (SOW) document outlines all the work agreed to be performed as part of a contract or subcontract. By describing in detail what deliverables are expected from the contractor, the Scope of WorkTemplate is the foundation for your whole project, helping it stay within budget and on time.

With every task, responsibility and expectation clearly laid out, the template makes sure that there are no surprises on the job site, that everyone is on the same page and that project deliverables are always met.

What goes into a scope of work document?

The scope of work template first asks you to state the purpose of the project and broadly summarize the work to be done. Next comes listing all deliverables, and each one includes specific details about:

  • the exact nature of the task, service, or work to be performed, and who is responsible
  • the required equipment, services or assistance needed to execute it
  • the timeline of the task and if any milestones must be met
  • the potential problems that could arise and possible strategies to deal with them
  • the projected deadline for completion

Finally, there should be a section regarding payment, which can be either the payment details for the entire contract or payment per individual task.

Who needs a scope of work template, and why?

Usually, the project manager drafts a SOW for contractors, who can adjust it until both parties agree on all of the specifics. As construction or engineering projects can be technical, language should be clear, concise, and thorough. Written this way, it eliminates confusion so that all parties are aware of and accountable to their responsibilities for project tasks.

The final version of the SOW is signed by the manager and the contractor, and both parties should have an easily-accessible copy for reference, performance tracking and updates.

Why a mobile app is better for your scope of work

When negotiating terms, passing draft SOWs written on paper back and forth between vendors and contractors is time-consuming and prone to input and tracking errors.

Using a mobile app, project managers can draft and share a SOW with contractors, who can then quickly edit and send back. With no paper to get in the way, a digital scope of work form can circulate quickly, is error- and hassle-free, and lets the right job start at the right time. Progress can be monitored with a click and, if there are any changes, it can be updated in real-time so that anyone who needs visibility over the project has it, all the time. Get everyone on the same page with the scope of work template.
